Long story short, the State of Kansas tried to quietly steal my car this week when they issued me a new title with the wrong VIN and year, and then suggested I would not be able to get it corrected without proof of ownership (after they had taken away my old Iowa title and destroyed it a month ago). After following a chain of bureaucracy, I ended up at the vehicle inspection place, where a guy told me I would have to start over where I started and call the State of Kansas to request a form for re-inspection which I would then bring back to the inspection place and then take to the DMV. Since I had already started by calling the State of Kansas and talking to the DMV, I was a little disheartened by the circular route in which I was being pointed.
Fortunately, the man who pushed my car out of the line of waiting cars and tried to fix it after it broke down during inspection last month overheard, and told the guy that if he filled out the regular form, put “no fee” at the top and then only gave me a copy to take back to the DMV, they would put in the correction without having to do all the waiting-for-forms stuff. They proceeded to do this, I headed back to the DMV armed with helpful man’s document, and lo and behold they put my request for a correction right in and gave me an updated copy of my registration.
So somewhere out there exists Inspector-Man, the nice man who pushes cars when they break down and circumvents confusing bureaucracy to get things done without making me pay another fee for someone else’s typo so that I can own my car again. He is my favorite. :D
